Prostate Cancer Screening

Screening Test

Two main tests for prostate cancer screening

  1. Digital rectal exam (DRE): The doctor or nurse inserts a gloved lubricated finger into the rectum and feels the prostate to check for anything abnormal.
  1. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test: Blood test to check the PSA level in the blood.

Screening interval

PSA can be done once every 2 years between the age of 45 and 70.
Men at increased risk of prostate cancer should consult family doctor about screening need.

  • Family medical history of colorectal cancer
  • History of colonic polyps
  • Prolonged bowel inflammation

Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT): (should be done every 1 – 2 years)

  • FOBT is a stool test, which detects hidden blood in stool samples, even in tiny amount indicating bleeding somewhere in the bowel.

Colonoscopy: (Should be done every 10 years)

  • Inspection of the entire colon with the help of a 1.6m scope.
  • The procedure takes about 15 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Bowel preparation and low residue diet is required.
  • To reduce anxiety and pain, sedative drugs and pain killers are injected right before the examination.
  • During the procedure, tissue samples are obtained and polyps can be removed.

Sigmoidoscopy: (Should be done every 5 years)

  • Flexible tube to inspect the walls of the rectum and the lower colon.
  • Procedure is similar to colonoscopy.

Cervical cancer screening

  • Women who have ever had sexual experience and are aged between 25 and 64 years old should have regular pap smears, NO MATTER whether you are single or married
  • If you are over 64 years old and have never had a pap smear, you should seek for doctor’s advice even if you no longer have menstrual periods, haven’t had sexual experience for many years or had sterilization.

1.Cervical examination (Pap smear):

2.Taking tissue sample for examination

Screening interval

If you have the first pap smear and the result is normal, you should have a second one 12 months later. If the second test is also normal, you should have repeat smears at least every 3 years.
